Administrative files of the State Comptroller, 1943-[ongoing].

This series documents the activities and functions of the office of the state comptroller. Divided by fiscal year, these records include correspondence, memoranda, allotment requests, indigent defense claims, payrolls, and receipts. Communications between the Director of the Dept. of Finance, the Comptroller, the Attorney General and the Governor are prominent throughout the series. Financial issues, such as state employee salaries, tax collection, interpretation of tax laws, and other subjects are discussed. The series also contains information about court cases involving financial matters of the State. Most notable is the file on the Patillo Milling Company of East Tallassee, Alabama. The owner, Ernest Patillo, entered into an agreement with Caroline S. Cavanaugh, Director of the Bureau of Publicity and Information, to manufacture samples of cornmeal for promotional purposes. Afterward the state refused to pay for the samples, claiming the agreement did not comply with state law regarding the promotion of tourism in Alabama.
